The Internet is moving away from being a data transportation and messaging platform, into a space filled with integrated rich-media content such as video and voice, and Web 2.0 platforms such as Facebook, that encourages online collaborations even at the enterprise level, according to Cisco Systems.

The networking giant also sees increasing demand for distributed virtualized data center architecture, Irving Tan, newly-appointed managing director of Cisco Singapore and Brunei, said during a media briefing here Thursday.

He noted that this “new Internet” will frame the company’s future strategies and product offerings.

CEO John Chambers said the economic recovery appears to be gaining speed, and that Cisco will add as many as 3,000 jobs over the next few quarters as it looks to continue its expansion into new markets. Chambers’ comments came as he announced a solid fiscal second quarter that included a 23.2 increase in income over the same period last year and an 8 percent jump in sales.

Cisco Systems will add 2,000 to 3,000 jobs over the next few quarters as it continues to push into new markets and as officials see the economic recovery gaining steam, according to CEO John Chambers.

Cisco Systems is on deck to deliver its fiscal second quarter results Wednesday and analysts are upbeat about the company’s prospects. The rub: Supply constraints may have put a lid on Cisco’s revenue.

Overall, Cisco is expected to deliver a strong quarter amid strong spending on data center upgrades and telecom companies’ infrastructure upgrades. In fact, a few analysts expect Cisco to hire about 2,000 to 3,000 employees over the next two to three quarters as demand bounces back.

Analysts expect Cisco to report second quarter earnings of 35 cents a share on revenue of $9.4 billion, according to Reuters Thomson. Gross margins are projected to be at 64.84 percent. In recent days, estimates have been creeping higher.

The bottom line: Cisco has weathered the downturn well and now is playing offense as it targets new markets and ramps up acquisitions.

Plastic Logic Que

Plastic Logic officially unveiled its business-oriented Que, which has a screen the size of an 8.5×11-inch piece of paper and integration with Barnes & Noble’s e-book store. The big issue is how expensive it is. A version with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth will cost $649, while a version that adds 3G wireless is $799. It’s available for preorder but may encounter tepid sales now that the iPad has arrived.

Avaya is looking to take the lead in enterprise telephony with its $900 million purchase of Nortel’s Enterprise Solutions business. The enterprise business is only the latest unit that bankrupt Nortel has sold off this year. Still, despite its efforts to drastically shrink the company, Nortel is continuing to roll out products, most recently announcing a 100G optical solution.

Avaya has completed its $900 million acquisition of bankrupt Nortel Network’s enterprise business, a deal that analyst say will push Avaya ahead of Cisco Systems in the enterprise telephony market.

With Nortel’s Enterprise Solutions business in the fold, Avaya, which announced the closing of the deal Dec. 18, will have about 25 percent of the enterprise telephony space, compared with Cisco’s 16 percent, according to analysts.

“The completion of this acquisition represents another major step in Avaya’s evolution and growth in the communications industry,” Avaya President and CEO Kevin Kennedy said in a statement. “Avaya and Nortel Enterprise Solutions share a common vision for the future of business communications.”

Amazon Kindle

At the beginning of 2009, Amazon updated the Kindle (often referred to as the jump from Kindle 1 to Kindle 2) with a much sleeker form factor, reorganization of controls, and more integrated memory. Amazon recently added an international Kindle to the mix with support for wireless access outside the US and then made all new Amazon Kindle devices the same US/international version to avoid confusion with multiple models. They switched from wireless access provided by Sprint to wireless access provided by AT&T in the US.

The Kindle has about a third of the front taken up by a QWERTY keyboard that you can use to look up words or search for books in your library and on the Amazon store and
