Hewlett-Packard on Thursday officially won storage vendor 3Par after Dell declined to match a $33 a share, or $2.4 billion, bid

Hewlett-Packard on Thursday officially won storage vendor 3Par after Dell declined to match a $33 a share, or $2.4 billion, bid.

Dell’s statement on the matter ended a wild bidding war that started at $18 a share for 3Par. Dell said in a statement that it will get a $72 million breakup fee. The company added that its final offer was for $32 a share.

The 3Par bidding war reflected the animosity between two fierce rivals, Dell and HP, and the fact that there aren’t many enterprise storage players to buy.

Earlier on Thursday, 3Par said Hewlett-Packard has raised its offer to $33 a share for the storage company, or $2.4 billion, after Dell countered with a $32 a share offer. 3Par deemed HP’s bid as superior. HP had bid $30 for 3Par and Dell countered with $32 a share. Dell also revised a termination fee to $92 million.

A growing coziness between T-Mobile USA and Sprint Nextel

A growing coziness between T-Mobile USA and Sprint Nextel has been rumored for months. At one point there were rumors that T-Mobile’s parent company, European communications goliath Deutsche Telekom, was preparing to buy Sprint and make it part of T-Mobile. So far, nothing had come of it—until now.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Sprint’s directors are considering an offer by T-Mobile to invest in Sprint’s Clearwire 4G service. Sprint currently owns slightly over half of Clearwire, giving it control of that company. Allowing T-Mobile to invest into Clearwire will give Sprint the money it needs to complete the built-out of its new 4G network, and it will give Deutsche Telekom an entrée into Clear’s LTE development effort being put into place in Arizona.

T-Mobile plans to increase theoretical peak speeds of its HSPA+ (High-Speed Packet Access) to 42M bps in 2011, according to an Aug. 31 statement from Neville Ray, the company’s chief network officer. Currently, the carrier offers “theoretical” peak speeds of 21M bps.

HSPA+ will allow Android phones to reach 4G speeds at downloads up to three times faster than 3G, the company has said.

T-Mobile also reported that it will expand the HSPA+ network to 100 million customers in the United States and nine additional cities, including Boston, San Diego, Miami, Topeka, Kan., and Spokane, Wash.

The carrier also plans to reach 200 million people later this year, according to Ray.

Wireless web traffic rules

Kevin Martin: Federal Communications Commissio...
Image via Wikipedia

U.S. communications regulators said on Wednesday they are considering whether wireless devices should be subject to different Internet traffic rules than telephone and cable lines, in a potential victory for carriers.

At issue is net neutrality, a term that means high-speed Internet providers should not block or slow information, or make websites pay to reach users more quickly.

Broadband providers and Internet companies have held a series of meetings this summer to forge a framework on how to treat the flow of Internet, but failed to reach an agreement.

The Federal Communications Commission has been involved in many of the talks and has been seeking public comments on the topic for months.

Proponents of net neutrality, including some Internet companies and public interest groups, argue consumers will be harmed if carriers create a two-tiered Internet.

Google is set to unveil a new feature to its Gmail service that aims to separate a user’s important emails from the ones that do not get read often.

The new feature called “Priority Inbox” will help users focus on messages that matter without having to set up complex rules, Google said in its official blog.

The Priority Inbox application splits the inbox into three sections: ‘Important and unread’, ‘Starred’ and ‘Everything Else’.

“As messages come in, Gmail automatically flags some of them as important. Gmail uses a variety of signals to predict which messages are important, including the people you email most and which messages you open and reply to,” the company said.

Google said Priority Inbox will roll out to all Gmail users, including those who use Google Apps, over the next week.

Wireless broadband services provider Clearwire announced the debut of Rover, a pay-as-you-go 4G mobile broadband service the company is marketing as ideal for “digitally addicted youth” who are tired of slow speeds, binding contracts and overpriced service. Rover is priced at $5 a day, $20 a week, or $50 a month for unlimited 4G Internet usage. New users receive two free days of service and the company is also offering a 14-day return policy for any device purchases made via the Rover Web site or in Clear stores.

Rover’s flagship device is the Rover Puck, an ergonomically designed portable Wi-Fi hotspot that lets users share broadband access, or “Puck”, with up to eight devices at home or on the go. The Puck serves as an access point for devices such as laptops, netbooks, Apple’s iPad and iPod touch, smartphones, PSP systems, game consoles, and Wi-Fi enabled digital cameras, among others. The company said the Puck, which retails for $149.99, features mobile download speeds of three to six mbps, with bursts over 10 mbps (up to 4x faster than conventional 3G), using Clearwire’s 4G network.

The intuitive design of the app makes it easy to navigate WestlawNext‘s content and use the WestSearch feature, which leverages over 100 years of editorial assets to deliver more inclusive results.
